My first ever byline was about the night I was sexually abused by an ex-boyfriend. Reactions included, "A raw and vulnerable account of an act of brutality" and "If this is what we can expect from your writing, you definitely have to continue!" Although the essay went viral, unfortunately, the publication folded just a year later.
